How to Get Reddit's Following Feed Sorted by New, Without Ads

Reddit's Home feed defaults to Best, a ranked, all-subreddit feed, and switching to Following plus New sort requires two manual taps that reset on the next app launch, with promoted posts appearing on any sort, so a browser extension that pins the combination and strips ads is the more reliable fix.

Reddit has a Following feed and a New sort, but they're two separate taps, neither is the default, and Reddit doesn't remember the combination between sessions. Promoted posts show up regardless of which sort you pick. This is what the actual setup takes, and what closes the gap Reddit leaves open.

What Reddit actually gives you

Two settings exist, and neither is where Reddit opens. Tap the feed switcher and Following shows posts only from subreddits and people you follow. Tap the sort menu and New orders that feed by post time instead of Reddit's engagement-weighted Best. Combined, that's a chronological, subscriptions-only feed, exactly the shape most people want.

Reddit doesn't save it. Close the app and reopen it, and Home is back, sorted by Best, pulling in subreddits you never subscribed to. Every session starts the fight over again, on two separate settings instead of one.

Ads don't care which feed you're on

Promoted posts show up mixed into the feed regardless of whether you're on Home or Following, Best or New. There's no setting that reduces how often they appear, only the option to hide a specific promoted post once, which does nothing to the ones that load after it.

What's left: the web version, pinned

The same mechanism that fixes this elsewhere in this library applies to Reddit too. Reddit's web version supports Following and New the same way the app does, and a Safari extension can act on it before the page renders:

  • Following loads by default, sorted by New, every time, with no re-tapping required per session.
  • Promoted posts are removed from the feed, on the pinned view, not just the one you dismissed.

Making it the default

Does Reddit have a chronological feed?
